Acular is an ophthalmic dosage form meant for temporary relief. It consists of Ketorolac Tromethamine as an active ingredient and under the class of non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is employed for preventing eye infection like pain, swelling and itching. It acts by inhibiting the hormone responsible for the infection.

Uses of Acular:

  • In the treatment of prophylaxis.
  • Also useful in reducing the symptoms after the ocular surgery like inflammation, pain or itching.
  • Used for reducing inflammation after seasonal allergy.

Mechanism of action of Acular:

Acular has analgesic as well as anti inflammatory activity. Acular is a NSAIDs which acts by inhibiting the releases of cyclo oxygenase enzyme. This enzyme is responsible for the synthesis of the prostaglandin after any kind of injury or surgery. Prostaglandin is responsible for the development of inflammation, pain and itching in the eye. As Acular blocks the synthesis of prostaglandin, hence the reduction in the pain and inflammation of the eye takes place.



Medication should be contraindicated, if:

  • Patients susceptible or aversion problem to the active as well as inactive constituent of the Acular.
  • Not recommended for post cataract surgery patients.
  • Having aversion problem to the any type of NSAIDs, Acetylsalicylic acid and Phenyl acetic acid and its derivatives.
  • Having hemorrhagic disorder.
  • Avoid in nursing mothers.
  • Recommended for those patients above 12 years.
  • Diseases like diabetes mellitus, asthma, nasal polyps and rheumatoid arthritis.

Drug interactions:

Such drugs that interact with the active or inactive components of Acular are:

  • Anti coagulant drugs, may increase the chances of post operative bleeding.
  • Any other NSAIDs, delays the healing after the surgery.
  • Topical corticosteroid drugs, also delays the healing capability.
  • Herbal products.
  • Anti platelet drugs.


  • Should be store in dark, humidity free and dirt free place.
  • Should be store at constant temperature ranges from the 15- 30° C.

Dose and mode of administration:

Available in the form of eye drop as well as eye solution in the market. The recommended dose for safer response is installed 1 drop 4 times in a day. It is meant for external use only.


Concern should be in use throughout the period of therapy. Avoid to instilled more drops extra of drug for getting quick and satisfactory result. It may produce sign and symptoms of overdosing after the medication.

Sign and symptoms of Acular:

  • itching
  • redness
  • inflammation
  • burning sensation

Missed dose:

Try to instilled medication on time for getting better therapeutic effects. If patient forget to take any dose of it, then try to catch up that dose as soon as possible. If it become the time for next dose, then skip that previous dose and instilled that next present dose. Don't try to instilled extra or double dose of the drugs at a single time.

Those unwanted effects produced after the instillation of the dosage form, other than the curative effect, are termed as side effects. These effects are:

  • Drainage or crusting from eyes.
  • Pain, swelling or redness in eyes.
  • Severe stinging, burning sensation, itching in the eyes.
  • Photosensitivity problem in the presence of light.
  • Changes in visual capability.
  • White patches on eyes.
  • Headache
  • Puffy or bloated eyelid.


For getting better or safer therapeutic effect from the dosage form, Patient should be takes some precautions throughout the period of medication. These precautions are:

  • Avoid wearing of contact lens, while medication.
  • Discard the bottle if the color and odor changes.
  • Don't touch the tip of the bottle while using.
  • Don't rub the eyes after administration of drug.
  • Don't use this therapy along with the other NSAIDs.
  • Discard the expired product of the dosage form.
