Advil is a non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used to lower the sensation of pain in the body. It acts by reducing the level of the hormone responsible for the activation of pain. It provides quick and long lasting effects to the patients.

Uses of Advil:

  • It is useful for the treatment of reducing pain like headache, arthritis, pain in muscles, back pain, pain during menstruation and any other joint pain.
  • Also useful in the treatment of fever.

Mechanism of action:

Release of prostaglandin is responsible for the association of pain, inflammation and fever. Ibuprofen comes under the category of NSAIDs, which acting by blocking the release of cyclo oxygenase in the body (COX). COX is the chemical which is useful in the synthesis prostaglandin. Advil blocks the releases of prostaglandin and therefore supportive in relieving the pain and inflammation associated in the body.



The medicine must be contraindicated in several circumstances like:

  • Severe allergy problem to the active and inactive ingredient of the Advil.
  • Don't helpful for Breast feeding mothers.
  • Don't beneficial for those patients having bypass surgery.
  • Not useful for children and older patient.
  • Suffered from epithelial herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis)
  •  Should not be used during the third trimester of pregnancy.
  • Having a medical history like liver or kidney disorder, hypertension, heart related diseases, diabetes mellitus or high cholesterol level.
  • Suffered from connective tissue disorder like lupus, Marfan disorder and SJorgen's disorder.
  • Not useful; for pregnant or breast feeding mother.

 Drug interactions:

Advil administered along with the other medicine which may get interact with each other. Consequently, this interaction changes the effects of each other. So, the therapy of Advil must be avoided with some medicines for the safer use of medication. Those drugs are:

  • With other NSAIDs drugs like aspirin.
  • Blood thinning drugs like Warfarin as it increases the chances of bleeding.
  • Having the therapy of oral steroids.
  • Drugs like Methotrexate and Cyclosporine.
  • Along with Lithium as it enhances the noxious level of lithium in the blood.
  • Drugs used in the treatment of hypertension.
  • Don't consume alcoholic beverages along with Advil.
  • Administered along with serotonin reuptake inhibitors like Citalopram.


  • Should be kept at room temperature which is ranges from 15- 25° C.
  • Should be protected from heat, light and moisture.

It is oral dosage form available in tablet, chewable tablets and in suspension form in the market. The recommended dose for the safer therapy of Advil is 3- 4 times in day with a full glass of water. For relieving pain the therapy should not be exceed from 10 days, whereas, for treating fever the therapy should be for 3 days.


Avoid misusing the therapy for receiving more efficient outcome from the dosage form of Advil, as it may develop some chronic adverse effects in the patients.

Sign and symptoms of overdose:

  • Feeling of nausea
  • Stomach ache
  • Severe vomiting
  • Bloody or black stool
  • difficulty in breathing
  • Coma
  • Drowsiness

Missed dose:

The effectiveness of the Advil should be maintained, if the dosage form administered on time. But, if the patient forgets to administer any dose of it, then take it as soon as without waiting for the time for next dose. Don't take the double dose of it, if it becomes the time for next dose.
