Optivar eye drops are used in the treatment of itching in the eyes caused by hypersensitivities (hay fever or pink eye). It is applied directly to the eyes affected by hypersensitivities, allowing a faster relief. This medication works quickly, helps in the prevention of itchy eyes within 3 minutes after applying it and the effects persists for 8 hours. You may observe a recovery in your eye indications after you start using this eye drop. This is a good sign that the drug is effective.

Optivar drop (Azelastine ophthalmic solution) is an antihistamine medication and exerts its action by inhibiting the release of histamine. It thus decreases the symptoms of a hypersensitive reaction in the eye.

DO NOT use Optivar eye drops if you are:

  • hypersensitive to any ingredient in Optivar eye drops
  • pregnant or breast-feeding
  • Children younger than 3 years of age

Optivar eye drops (Azelastine) must not be used along with the under mentioned classes of drugs as they increase or decrease the potency of Azelastine:

  • antipsychotic medications
  • muscle relaxants
  • drugs for pain (narcotic analgesics)
  • anti-anxiety drugs
  • antidepressant medicines
  • sleeping pills
  • anti-allergic drugs

Store Optivar eye drops in the refrigerator or room temperature between 15oC to 30oC.

In adults and children above the age group of three years, you should add one drop of this eye drop into each affected eye, two times a day. The 0.2 mL container of Optivar eye drops or Azelastine is for one time use only. You should throw away the bottle after one use, even if there is still some drug left in it.

MODE OF ADMINISTRATION: First, wash your hands, while using this eye drop. Incline your head back. Pull the lower eyelid away from the eye using your index finger to form a pouch. Then drop the eye drops into the pouch and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Do not blink your eyes while the eye drop is in your eye. And remove excess drug around your eye with a dry and clean blotting tissue and don't touch the eye. Remember to wash your hands to remove any drug that may be left on them. Do not touch the applicator tip with your fingers or any other source.

If you skip a dose of this medication by mistake, add it in the affected eye(s) as soon as you memorize. On the other hand, if it is the time for your subsequent dose, leave out the one you skipped and return to your usual dosing timetable. Do not apply two doses without delay.

More common side effects of Optivar may include: headache, brief eye stinging or burning and bitter taste.

Less common side effects of Optivar may include: flu-like symptoms, shortness of breath, conjunctivitis (pink eye), tiredness, eye pain, aching throat, stuffy nose and temporary blurred vision.

  • Keep in mind, never share Optivar eye drops with others and keep it out of the reach of children.
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages while using these eye drops as this medication makes you feel sleepy.
  • Take out your contact lenses prior to administration of Optivar eye drops. You may reinsert the lens 15 minutes after you apply this eye drops. You contact lens has a tendency to absorb a preservative that may be present in Optivar.
