Dianette is an oral tablet contains two main active ingredients cyproterone acetate and ethinylestradiol. This combination of medicines is also known as co-cyprindiol. It is used as contraception for women, used for the treatment of severe acne in women that has not responded to treatment with oral antibiotics and for treatment of abnormal hair growth in women caused due to excessive production of male sex hormones.

Cyproterone acetate is an anti-androgen. The function of androgen is to stimulate the growth of skin, causing sebaceous glands producing oil and growth of hair from the skin.  Cyproterone acetate blocks the action of the androgens. It works by blocking the receptors in the body that the androgens. It blocks the receptors on which androgen works.

The medicine works as a contraceptive; it prevents ripening and release of eggs from the ovaries and also increases the thickness of the cervical mucus so that it becomes difficult for sperm to cross vagina to enter the womb.

Dianette is contraindicated in following cases-

  • This drug should not be consumed by females who are pregnant.
  • Breastfeeding mothers should not consume this medicine.
  • Women having blood disorders which increase the risk of blood clots in the veins should not consume this medication.
  • Females who ever had a heart attack, stroke caused due to the blood clot in an artery.
  • Females with high blood pressure should not consume this drug.
  • Women with a history of breast cancer should not consume this medication.
  • Females having severe vaginal bleeding due to unknown reason should not consume this medication.

Drugs that should not be consumed with Dianette are-

  • Anti-tuberculosis drugs such as Rifampin or Rifabutin should not be consumed as it makes the drug ineffective.
  • If weight loss medications such as orlistat is consumed with Dianette then it may cause severe Diarrhea.
  • Antifungal drugs like Griseofulvin should not be consumed with this drug as it makes an effect of Dianette less effective.
  • Cholesterol-lowering medicine like Colesevelam along with this pill may reduce the absorption of the pill from the gut making this pill less effective.

Storage condition of Dianette are-

  • This medication should be stored away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
  • It should be kept away from children.
  • This drug should be kept at room temperature.

  • Consume one tablet regularly for 21 days and then have a break of seven days from taking pills. After seven days break the level of hormone in blood drops, which results in bleeding, which is similar to a normal period.

Start a next pack of pill after seven days, even if still bleeding.

  • The pack contains a calendar inside it to make you remember to take a pill every day. Each pill should be swallowed with water.

In case of missed dose the pill should be consumed immediately as soon as you remember .If it is the time to take next dose then consume both missed and next dose at the same time, then continue taking rest of the tablets normally.

In case if overdose is taken then following overdose symptoms may occur such as-

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache/migraine
  • Breast tenderness and enlargement
  • Weight changes
  • Fluid retention in the body

If these symptoms occur then consult a doctor.

Dianette may show some adverse effects such as-

  • Menstrual spotting or breakthrough bleeding
  • Depression
  • Rise in blood pressure
  • Skin reactions like itching, rashes

 

  • Dianette should consume with caution by women of age above 35 years.
  • Females who are obese, have diabetes should take this drug with caution.
  • Pregnant and breast feeding mothers should not consume this medication.
  • Women with heart failure should not consume this drug.
  • Women with a history of migraine should not consume this medicine.
