Ocufen is a sterile topical preparation meant for eye disorder like cataract. It mainly contains Flurbiprofen sodium (0.3 mg/mL) as an active ingredient and belongs to the category of non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The inactive components are: PVA 1.4%, Citric acid, Potassium chloride, Sodium citrate, Edetate disodium and Sodium chloride and Purified water.

Uses of Ocufen:

  • It is used before the eye surgery for preventing constriction or narrowing of the pupil occurs during eye surgery.
  • Also used to treat pain, swelling and redness associated in the eye.

 

Mechanism of action:

Flurbiprofen is NSAIDs, which acts by inhibiting the activity of cyclo oxygenase in the body (COX). COX is responsible for the synthesis of the chemical like prostaglandin. It is the compound which is responsible for the occurrence of the pain, swelling and inflammation due to the surgery or by any injury. Ocufen Inhibit the production of prostaglandin and hence helpful in lowering the pain and inflammation associated with the eyes. It also Blocks the induction of meiosis occurs at the time of cataract surgery.

 

Contraindications:

The medication should be contraindicated in some conditions like:

  • Having the hypersensitivity problem with the active ingredient and to any inactive ingredient of the Ocufen.
  • Don't useful for Breast feeding mother.
  • Don't suffer from any blood clotting or bleeding disorders.
  • Suffered from epithelial herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis)
  •  Should not be used during the third trimester of pregnancy.

 Drug interactions:

Ocufen along with the other medication may develop the interaction within the drugs. Hence they alter the action of each other. So, the medication of Ocufen should be avoided with some drugs for the better usage. Such drugs are:

  • Blood thinning drugs like Warfarin as it enhances the possibility of bleeding.
  • Drugs like Methotrexate and Cyclosporine.
  • Lithium as it creates the toxic level of lithium in blood. Because Flurbiprofen blocks the elimination of lithium through the kidney.
  • Drugs useful in treating high blood pressure.

Storage:

  • Medication should be stored at temperature ranges from 15- 25° C.
  • Store away from heat, light and moisture.

The recommended dose of Ocufen ophthalmic preparation should be administered 4 drops before 2 hours of surgery begins. 1- 1 drop instilled in every half an hour for 2 hrs before the surgery.

Overdose:

Avoid misusing the drug for getting more effective result from Ocufen, as it creates severe side effects to the patients. Don't instill the more dose of it at a time or increases the time interval within the dosing period.
