Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a state characterized by decrease in the density of bone, decrease in its strength and finally results in fragile bones. It is a bone disorder, where the bones become weak and starts to break from a minor fall or in severe cases, they start to fall even from simple actions. Osteoporosis generally leads to abnormally porous bone which is compressible, like a sponge. This disorder of the skeleton weakens the bone and results in frequent fractures.

Osteoporosis is a common condition that affects millions of people. Approximately one in every two women and one in every four men at the age of 50 and older will face bone breakage due to osteoporosis.

Number of risk factors has been identified that raise the risk of osteoporosis such as age factor, ethnicity, bone structure, genetic disorder, facture history, lack of exercise, lack of calcium and vitamin D, excess of smoking and alcohol, low body weight etc. Some of the common symptoms that cause this disorder are bone loss that develop slowly, stain, breaks occur in wrist, hip or in the spinal.

The risk of developing osteoporosis and fracture can be lowered by obtaining healthy lifestyle and with the help of drug treatments.
