Plan B is an oral emergency contraceptive medication meant for female candidates. Plan B Contains generic Levonorgestrel as an active ingredient and used to inhibit pregnancy after the unprotected sexual intercourse. In case of unprotected sex or the failure of any birth control device the female should take Plan b as soon as possible, i.e. within 72 hrs of unprotected intercourse.

Mechanism of action of Plan B:

  • Plan B contains generic Levonorgestrel; it acts by inhibiting or delaying the process of ovulation (release of an egg from the ovary) of a female. 
  • Generic  Levonorgestrel obstructs process of fertilization (meeting of sperm with egg).
  • It also acts by inhibiting the process of implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus by changing its lining.

Contraindications of Plan B:

Plan B should be avoided in certain medical condition-

In case of having any allergy to the active generic  Levonorgestrel, abnormal bleeding, history of breast cancer , endomtrial problem, adrenal porphyria, ovarian vysts, and asthma.

 Drug interactions of Plan B:

Following drugs may interact with Plan B-

  • Xanthine derivatives
  • Penicillin
  • Tetracycline's
  • Anti depressant drugs
  • Anti psychotic drugs
  • Anti tuberculosis drugs
  • Barbiturates

Storage of Plan B:

  • Should be stored in air tight container and at room temperature varied from 15 to 30° C.
  • Should be protected from heat and humidity.
  • Keep this medicine away from the reach and view of children.

The first dose of oral contraceptive pill should be taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. Plan B tablet should be administered orally with a glassful of water. 

The second dose of the Plan B should be 12 hours later to 72hours dosing.  

If vomiting occurs within One hour of using a pill, consult your doctor to discuss whether to repeat the dose.

Adverse effects of Plan B include-

  • Disorders of GIT: Pain in Abdominal cavity, feeling of nausea and vomiting
  • Disorders related to the Nervous System: Dizziness, headache and migraine
  • Reproductive System and Breast Disorders: Dysmenorrheal disorder, irregularity in menstruation, oligomenorrhea and pain in Pelvic region.
  • Fatigue


Some precaution should be taken to avoid side effects developed from the Plan B-

  • Avoid alcohol or any other fermented drink along with plan B.
  • Don't crush or break the dosage form for ease of administering the dosage form.
  • Don't administer if patient suffered from any stomach or intestinal disorders.
  • Don't use if other birth control method already adopted like IUDs.
  • It doesn't provide any kind of protection against the sexually transmitted disease.
  • Does not take it as a routine contraceptive pill.
  • Avoid intake of tea and coffee in excess quantity while taking Plan B for pregnancy prevention.
